Roger Smith

What themes run throughout your work? Colour, geometric structures, shape, form and textures, nature's cycle of life and death and the inextricable link between order and chaos.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? To remind people of the beauty that surrounds us that is largely ignored due to the fast pace of modern life and the largely technological age we live in.

What sounds influence your work? I like to elicit an emotional response. Nature has so much scope that I try to improve on it by creating a piece of Art either by abstraction or manipulation of photographic techniques

Where do your talents lie? Photography and art (including painting and photomontage)

What successes have you had so far? Articles and editorials in The Daily Telegraph, Interior magazine, Dorset Life, Digital Photographer and other press. Exhibitions in the South West of UK.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? Drawing/painting.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Friends, and College and University tutors.

What makes you creative? The voice in my head that won't let me rest until I have transformed my ideas into reality.

How did you get started? An artist friend who gave me the push and confidence to try to draw, paint and pick up a camera.

What inspires you? Nature and my environment. All sensory information.

Who inspires you? Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, Salvador Dali and the Surrealists, David Bailey, Albert Watson, Anton Corbijn, David La Chapelle, Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel Peter Witkin – to name but a few.

Do you collaborate? I am working with a Sculptor – David Nicholls and photographing macro close ups of his 3D relief work and we are planning an exhibition at his gallery next year. I am open to other collaborations.

What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Freedom to be creative.
