Richard Butler

What themes run throughout your work? My work is very architectural. I use strong line drawing and also use spot colour quite a lot to draw attention.

What successes have you had so far? I have been published worldwide a few times in publications such as The New York Times, London based current affairs magazine Diplo and Computer Arts magazine.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? It was amazing! I designed the logo for my infant school when I was about 6 years old! It’s a smiley sunshine and they still use it today!

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Many people. My parents, my girlfriend, my tutors, my friends from college. I’m always open to criticism. How else do you improve?

What inspires you? Strange things like buildings with lots of windows! Drain pipes and weird roofs too! Edinburgh is just the most amazing place to be for me because I’m constantly inspired. I really like windows tho!

Artist Statement: I am a freelance graphic designer and illustrator who works primarily as a reportage and character artist. Using hand drawn imagery and a computer, I create professional, whimsical and versatile images that are ideal for use in the editorial and web based markets, among others.
