Rebecca Hitchman

What themes run throughout your work? Emotions. I'm most influenced by unusual, gritty, experimental, and REAL photographs, especially portraits that show a small piece of the subject's character. My aim is for that to come across in my work.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? I don't know really, because each photograph is unique and portrays different emotions and feelings for me. Also, everyone has different ideas in their own interpretation of a given artwork. Finding meaning in art is quite a personal thing, I think. Especially since there are no right or wrong answers, only opinions. I think that's one of the great things about showcasing your work on the internet – you get to hear so many views about what something you created means to other people. In general though, I just hope people enjoy it in one way or another, and want to see more!

What sounds influence your work? The sound the oven timer makes when it makes that little ding. Music wise, everything punk is amazing. My current obsession is PJ Harvey though; her lyrics have been a huge inspiration to me lately. Oh, and all things Riot Grrl!

What successes have you had so far? It's funny, I still feel like I'm at the very beginning of my artistic journey, so I've never really thought about things in terms of successes. I've had a few photographs published in some well known photography magazines, and I've sold a fair amount of prints on the internet. Apart from that, just being able to create pieces of art that people appreciate, and are touched by, is a pretty big success in my opinion.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? Wow, difficult question! I've grown up doing pretty much every kind of creative craft and art type thing you can think of, (and still do!). But the very first creative thing I did? Drawing, I guess, I think every kid started with drawing.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Probably being at college, I've learnt a lot (and am still learning a lot!) there. And everyone that I've “worked” with, all the amazing and patient people that model or have modelled for me in the past. Oh, and a friend who taught me how to use Photoshop.

How did you get started? With an awful, plastic toy-type digital camera, dressing up clothes, and friends willing to strike a pose whenever I told them to.

What inspires you? Emotions, music, art, nature, experiences, people.

Do you collaborate? I have done in the past, and I'm always up for new experiences. So, yes.

Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? A professional photographer, making money out of doing fashion shoots, portraits, exhibitions, etc. Oh, and a writer! And to make enough money to travel whenever and wherever I want to.

Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? The same!

What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? Life.
