Paul Goddard

What themes run throughout your work? I would have to say an appreciation for the power of Line. Whether representation of semiotic and phenomenological stress patterns along a 2D grid form or tracing the delicate curves of a Stag’s antlers, line is fundamental.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? I hope that I can be something different or make people think slightly differently.

What sounds influence your work? The traffic, the bass.

What makes you decide to create your work? A kinetic flurry of energy, and I go mad at the canvas or the drawing board, I live to create. I create all day and I come home and create some more.

Where do your talents lie? Although not skilled as such, I have a talent for thinking objectively about a subject, and understanding the visual kinetics that lie within a subjects psyche

What successes have you had so far? I have had some work published; I have some paintings hanging up nicely in people’s houses. I would like to do more!

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? Age four or five, big sandcastle cities. Pre-designed with the streets named and everything.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? I’ve always been better finding out for myself.

What makes you creative? I think fundamentally it was the creative energy and genius of my grandfather, being encouraged by my parents. Finding solace and imagination with a pencil in a fairly lonely childhood.

How did you get started? I looked for creative alternatives whilst I was at Architecture School, as 24 hours a day of buildings got a little dry.

What inspires you? Richness, Individuality, Power, Spirit, Terror

Who inspires you? The late great Tamara de Lempicka, Taschen, Picasso, Gerry Baptist, Giger,

What do you do when you are suffering from creative block? Its not something I generally experience. Its my job to find the way round it quickly

What are you trying to achieve? To one day become part of an all-encompassing creative community, whether it is a business or an environment where I can work and collaborate with similar minds

Do you collaborate? Occasionally, but Cardiff is fairly isolated in creative terms.

Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? Happy and Loved.

Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? Eventually qualify as an architect to establish ‘the career’, one day be able to create for myself without worrying about the bills.

What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? Barcelona at 3AM.

What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Peace and love in your heart.

Who/what is your nemesis and why? My nemesis is common sense, tradition, and obedience.
