Lucy Brown

What themes run throughout your work? I often work with females; I’m trying to branch out a little from that though, I like my work to have a commercial feel to it as professional looking as possible.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? I hope my photographs make people desire; whether it’s a product or a person, I think that’s the idea of advertising anyway.

What makes you decide to create your work? I look at a lot of other peoples work I think its important to keep up to date on where things are moving, sometimes I get ideas from visiting certain locations as well.

What successes have you had so far? I have been very lucky, I have a few great clients and have had work published in The Times, The telegraphy, FHM and many other great newspapers and magazines.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? When I was really young I remember taking an art class and doing really well in it and people saying I had a gift, I always wanted to be an artist until I started applying for university and I wasn’t accepted onto an art course instead I was told I should take the photography route.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Lots of people, my father taught me the technical side of photography, and people I have worked with in the past have taught me the creative side, I have learnt a lot from other people.

How did you get started? When I was 16 I got my first camera, digital cameras were very new then and expensive I started shooting close up things like flowers and insects getting used to how the camera works, I have always been really interested in macro.

What inspires you? Locations, people, crazy hair do’s and makeup, other peoples work.

Who inspires you? Patrick Demarchelier

What do you do when you are suffering from creative block? I usually give myself a few days away from what I do, try and switch off, which is really difficult for me but if I’m blocked it usually means I’m over thinking things

Do you collaborate? Yes, I like to bring lots of different peoples ideas into a photo shoot, hair stylists, makeup artist, wardrobe stylists etc, I also like to use multiple models.

Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? Always a photographer

Who/what is your nemesis and why? Probably anyone who over photo shops self-portraits and then calls themselves a photographer.
