Kris Flores

What themes run throughout your work? I have yet to discover my own, unique style. My photography professor often describes my work as being provocative, so I guess sensual themes. I'm still in the process of experimenting on different styles and themes until I find one that suits me best.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? I'd like to create something surreal and disturbing that strikes both confusion, and curiosity in people while telling a story or emphasizing an idea/concept.

What makes you decide to create your work? My determination

Where do your talents lie? Art. Whether it be taking photographs or sketching a random thought that comes into my mind.

What successes have you had so far? I've been commissioned for book cover work, and I'm due to photograph a wedding soon as well as a hosiery collection for R&R Fashions. Some of my work is currently being exhibited at my college's art gallery.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? As far as photography is concerned, I guess it would be the shot I took of my friend, Diana with the peacock feather over her eye. It became an instant hit within my college's art department and was even used to promote the photography exhibit.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? The Photography course I'm attending has been very helpful in understanding the technical aspects of my camera better.

What makes you creative? I need to be inspired and will myself to bring my work to the next level. A lot of thought, self motivation and perseverance play a huge role in creativity.

How did you get started? I stumbled upon a photography website one day, and after frequent visits, I finally got inspired to try it out myself. Back in the day, I only had a polaroid a310, and my knowledge in the field of photography was extremely minimal which resulted in poorly composed photos.

What inspires you? A lot of things, but my main inspiration is music. When I listen to music from my iPod, random images pop into my head that I quickly associate with that particular song. I then sketch the image on a piece of paper, and decide whether or not it's possible to take with my camera (a lot of those ideas would require major photo editing, and I have yet to get my photoshop installed)

Who inspires you? Various photographers/digital artists: Havi Frost, Ansel Adams, Adam Bouska, Diana Hall.. to name a few. The stunning work produced by my photography professors and classmates inspire me as well

What do you do when you are suffering from creative block? I observe a photograph that I like a lot, and try do it my own way. The results often come out a lot better.

What are you trying to achieve? I'm trying to get myself and work out there. I'm continuously updating my portfolio to hopefully gain some more clients along the way.

Do you collaborate? Yes. I love collaborating on creative projects! You meet a lot of fun/nice people, and their input/ideas make the photo session that much more creative.

Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? A successful photographer

Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? A photographer

What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? The publishing company sent my dad a pdf format of his book, and seeing one of my own photos used as his book cover gave me a real sense of accomplishment.

What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Love

Who/what is your nemesis and why? Fear. I'm constantly holding myself back because of it.
