David Severn

What themes run throughout your work? The fundamental serenity and quiet beauty of nature that often goes unnoticed in today's fast paced society.

How do you hope your work will affect its audience? For me, photographing is a way of slowing down and appreciating my surroundings, I hope my images do the same for others. I aim to create a tranquil escape from the fast lane.

What sounds influence your work? Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky

What makes you decide to create your work? I have a constant flow of creative ideas and photography is my primary output of them. I, myself lead a rather busy, rushed life and photography is my way of slowing down and clearing my mind.

Where do your talents lie? Photography and creative writing

What successes have you had so far? I've learnt a lot from work experience placements I've had, I've been included in several group exhibitions and have sold some prints. I really want to make this year my year though, sending my work into lots of magazines and agencies. I think I'm going to start doing commissions too.

What was the first creative thing that you ever did? I used to write short stories about inanimate objects coming to life when I was a kid.

Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? I'm mostly self-taught but I've picked up some useful lighting and darkroom skills from my education.

What makes you creative? The world and all its people

How did you get started? I started taking hundreds of photographs with a small compact camera. It was very lacking in functionality but it provided me with a way of experimenting with composition. I mostly photographed still life at first and then embarked on a journey to find my own style.

What inspires you? The night, walking down empty streets of a city in the early hours

Who inspires you? Rolfe Horn, Michael Kenna

What are you trying to achieve? Visual Haiku

Do you collaborate? I've not done so far but it's something I really want to do in the near future.

Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? A photographer!

Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? Always, a photographer

What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? I couldn't say precisely, I've seen some blatantly brilliant things but I think sometimes the small things can have epic qualities to them.

What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Living, love and dreams

Who/what is your nemesis and why? I can be my own worst enemy sometimes. I have a overly-crowded mind and I sometimes find it hard to focus on one particular thought because there's so much going on in my head.
