Artist Statement: Charles Lee is an artist whose works are provoked by the senses, the sensual and the sensational. Whatever lies beyond our most primal faculties, our most basic desire to feel, Charles Lee captures both humbly and spectacularly.
Charles Lee grew up in the boroughs of Hampshire, England. After graduating from Portsmouth University in 2001 with a BA honors degree in Graphical Media and Fine Art he moved to Los Angeles, California where the volume of voice that carries in each and every art piece was realized. It is here that he extensively experimented and formed his own artistic character, which is now travelling with him throughout Europe. He is currently residing in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
His work has been described by students, critics, buyers and gallery owners alike as being akin to abstract expressionism, with flavours of realism and cubism. Charles Lee acknowledges these influences but enjoys leaving his pieces unlabeled and unnamed to allow his audiences the distinct pleasure of unhindered connection sans suggestive preconception.
They cannot truly be measured from afar or through a lens. Enough to get an impression and to notice their forms and styles, themes and techniques. When explored up close they immerse you. And that's the magic of the art of Charles Lee. Every piece has an unfathomable spirit. You absorb the depth of texture that resounds unhindered by frame or prejudice. Lines grow and sprawl across the canvas, moving with every step closer you get. Living, breathing conjurings that embrace you into a realm that is as unknown as it is familiar, like the raw fabric of déjà-vu. With a mix of styles and mediums used in his work, Charles is ever evolving his style keeping him as unique as any artist forges to be.
