What themes run throughout your work? I am looking for new kinds of beauty.
How do you hope your work will affect its audience? The audience will be inspired.
What makes you decide to create your work? I think I can make something new, something I didn't see before.
Where do your talents lie? I am clever with design and color and ideas.
What successes have you had so far? I've had a half-dozen solo shows.
What was the first creative thing that you ever did? A lot of poetry in high school.
Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Not in particular.
What makes you creative? I believe you're born an artist. Like being a priest or athlete.
How did you get started? I always knew I wanted to be a novelist, which is my first art.
What inspires you? Anything. In my head. And around me.
Who inspires you? I tend to look at the best, and hope that I can compete with them.
What do you do when you are suffering from creative block? Work on a different project.
What are you trying to achieve? To be very creative, and maybe even make money.
Do you collaborate? Not much.
Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? Just what I am.
Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? Just what I am, but make more money.
What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? Well, if even one ghost story is true, it changes everything.
What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Being creative. Being a good person.
Who/what is your nemesis and why? Money.
Artist Statement: In the art world today it is very common for artists to issue long statements of purpose. Often the words carry more weight than the art. Personally, I don't trust all this verbiage. I want to make art that is very pure, that requires no explanation, art that is what it is. In particular, I enjoy trying to create art that has no obvious antecedents. For me the ideal is that the art is like a flower--it just blossoms into existence and needs no further commentary.
Recently, I'm working on a series called Small Universes. These are small, mixed media paintings/constructions that try to measure up to this statement. (Several are shown here; more can be seen on my site ArtNorfolk.com.)
