What themes run throughout your work? Modernity, frustration, urgency and desperation.
How do you hope your work will affect its audience? We hope it makes them think. We hope it makes them laugh. We hope it makes them angry about things that need people to get angry about them. We hope it shakes people out of their apathy and out of the state-sponsored dead time that grips and suffocates their emotions and humanity. We hope it makes them thrash about madly, jump off the sofa and throw their vacuum cleaner through the window.
What sounds influence your work? It changes. Today it's the background noise of life in an anxious age; the static chatter of TV, radio and internet; the background hum of crowds; noise pollution; the push-things-forward, groping-for-the-next-thing sounds of post punk; the thrill-shock of political rap; the poetry of John Cooper Clarke; disco ringtones; barcodes being scanned; pop hooks and Frank Black screaming: "Toe! Knee! Toe! Knee!" at the end of 'Tony's Theme'.
What makes you decide to create your work? The awful, restless, brain-itching feeling of having a head full of pointless information and the need to get it out and make some sense of it before even more gets crammed in and your head shuts down in the crush.
Where do your talents lie? In coming up with answers to this kind of questionnaire.
What successes have you had so far? We are all still alive and sane.
What was the first creative thing that you ever did? As a band it was thrashing through a poem called "Burn, Cambridge, Burn" using a £5 plastic microphone, a tiny practice amp and a child's drum kit while the neighbourhood dogs howled in protest.
Has anyone taught you how to use your talent better? Playing gigs has been the teacher. Actually throwing ourselves on stage in front of paying audiences with only the vaguest idea what we are going to do appears to have forged us into something approaching a band.
What makes you creative? Our genes? Fuck knows. The desire to avoid boredom at all costs is probably the most honest answer.
How did you get started? The simultaneous discovery that one of us had written some lyrics and that another could hit the drums in time.
What inspires you? Emotional survival.
Who inspires you? Hero worship is necrophilia.
What do you do when you are suffering from creative block? Very little. Actually, that's not true; we bicker.
What are you trying to achieve? We want to overcome music. We want to puncture boredom and show people that it is still possible to live life for real, with your eyes open and mad laughter on your lips. That giving a shit will not kill you. It might actually save you.
Do you collaborate? Not yet…
Ignoring money and all of life’s woes, what would you want to be? What we are – only more so.
Accepting the need for money and all of life’s woes, what do you want to be? This is essentially the same question.
What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen / heard / experienced? Where do you even start with that? Amazing stuff happens constantly and it is impossible and pointless to try to rank it. The other day I opened a garden gate and saw the gatepost covered in a dense mass of tiny, bright golden spiders like the sparks falling from an exploding firework.
What do you consider to be the most important thing in life? Living it.
Who/what is your nemesis and why? Boredom. Complacency. Ignorance.
Artist Statement: It's art punk rock. It's loud; it's spoken word, apoplectic ranting, yelping and screaming to driving rhythms and furious guitars. It's the sound of now and very possibly tomorrow as well. Why? Because we are Bored shitless with off-the-peg, Pop Idol, consumer culture - the Spectacular Society where all you can see are things and their price. We wanted to do it ourselves. We want you to do it yourself. Ideas. Passion. Up yours to a trash celebrity elite created in boardrooms to keep you enthralled, passive, obedient. No more icons anymore. Blow it up, burn it down, kick it till it breaks. That's why.
