Artist Statement: My name is Bob Gravenor. I am an artist, and a painter. I must paint.
I need the creative thrill of the conversations and battles with the canvas that lead to that moment when the painting is complete. I use acrylics. Their versatility and fast dry-time keeps the conversation moving and gives it scope.
I am fascinated by light and by colour; The fleeting moments and colours of light that reveal the character and emotion of a place, a person, or a relationship. So I paint landscapes and portraits.
In the four years to 2009, I sold exclusively by commission, concentrating on developing my skills as a painter. My work from this period is typically highly detailed, and compact in scale.
Having gained confidence in my skills, I now work in a more expressive style which, whilst sufficiently informing the viewer, aims to stimulate the viewer's imagination and invoke pleasant memories, and thereby actively form a relationship between the viewer and the canvas. This style of work is at a much larger scale, allowing me to put more energy into the marks I make, and to give space to enjoy the way the paint behaves; It's fluidity and stiffness, and the marks-within-marks of unblended colour.
Joining the community of artists that form the Wet Paint Gallery, Athy, I am intrigued by the way people react to paintings, both those by myself and those by others. I feel deeply honoured when one of my creations becomes a part of someone else's life, whether for a minute or for a lifetime.
My name is Bob Gravenor. I am an artist, and a painter. My paintings are me.
